Bekaert nv/sa
Bekaert is a technology-driven business which produces and markets a wide range of products based on metal-forming and coating technologies. The group's current activities are built around four business units: Wire, Merchant Products Europe, Steel Cord and the fast-growing Bekaert Advanced Materials.
Bekaert has grown from a small manufacturing and trading company, founded by Leo Leander Bekaert in 1880, into a global group with its head office in Belgium. Starting in Western Europe, the group's rapid internationalisation soon extended to Latin America, North America and Asia, fuelled by the burgeoning demand for steel cord for radial tyre reinforcement. Bekaert now has over 80 production centres world-wide and an extensive network of sales offices and agencies. In 2000 the consolidated companies and participating interests generated sales in excess of EUR 2.7 billion and employed 17 202 people.Bekaert, a technology-driven business, is currently engaged in a process of renewal, moving away from high-volume manufacturing and into high-margin products with higher added value, based on its core competences. Bekaert has developed a strongly focused strategy designed to increase the proportion of finished products and targeting markets with high inherent growth potential, through international expansion in selected segments and geographical regions. Total Quality Management, Total Environmental Care and continuous cost control are an integral part of this strategy. The emphasis is on innovation, developing new products and applications while instilling the necessary competences in our personnel. Innovation - the engine driving sustainable growth and profitability - is one of Bekaert's top priorities. The introduction of new products offering higher added value, significant growth potential and wider margins will have a significant impact on Bekaert's future product portfolio. In 2000, for example, Bekaert moved into solar cell production, a good example of a new application of one of the wide range of coating technologies at Bekaert's disposal.
