.MGX by Materialise: The ONE_SHOT.MGX foldable stool has been launched
Release date: 04 Aug 2006
'For the first time in history, a kinetic, integrated, functional design piece has been produced in a single, non-assembled unit. This functional piece of furniture, including all moving parts, was produced in one piece by the Rapid Prototyping technique known as Selective Laser Sintering.'
Naomi Kaempfer, Managing Art Director .MGX

The ONE_SHOT.MGX foldable stool, designed by Patrick Jouin, has been launched to tremendous success at the Salone Del Mobile Milan in April 2006, and in May 2006 at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York.

A symbol and highlight in contemporary top achievements of the Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Manufacturing (RP and RM) creations of .MGX, the ONE_SHOT.MGX Stool has been purchased for the MoMA NY Collection and Presidency. Also purchased were a wide variety of .MGX products, including a special edition of the Future Systems fruit bowl designed by Amanda Levete. The ONE_SHOT.MGX stool has also been acquired by the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, in New York.

About ONE_SHOT.MGX

Now in its third year, .MGX is promoting RP and RM technologies in the field of product design and interior goods. This new stool is made in Polyamide with 3D printing technology known as Selective Laser Sintering. All hinges are integrated in the 3D structure and built in one go, in one piece with no need for assembly - hence the name, 'ONE_SHOT.MGX'.

Dimensions folded position : length 650 mm * diameter 110 mm
Dimensions seating position : height 400 mm * diameter 320 mm

.MGX has used the latest cutting-edge technology to launch this exceptional example of high scale RP product, engineered to reduce production time. This enables .MGX to release to the market the first relatively reduced price commercial furniture product created with Rapid Manufacturing Technology, following the successful Solid Collection, also designed by Patrick Jouin.

This Laser Sintering technique enables the creation of the entire seating surface, legs and hidden integral articulations in just 'one shot'. The stool emerges from the machine in its final and complete form, with all axles, screws, springs and hinges concealed by the graceful structure of the stool itself. By virtue of gravity combined with a simple, elegant, soft-turning twist, this array of rods transforms in one flowing movement to a small, useful and aesthetically strong seat.

About Patrick Jouin

Patrick Jouin was born in 1967 in Nantes, France. After graduating from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Creation Industrielle (ENSCI) in 1992, Patrick started working as a designer at Compagnie des Wagon-Lits and 'Tim Thom' Thomson Multimedia.

In 1995, Patrick joined Philip Starck's studio in Paris, and started his own studio, The Agence Patrick Jouin, in 1998. Grounded in a desire to make extraordinary modern experiences, it did not take long before the studio expanded from mere product design to entire interiors and full-scale architectural projects.

In 2004, Patrick Jouin started up a research atelier for furniture, which lead him to explore new techniques and materials, resulting in the Solid Collection.

About Materialise.MGX

Materialise NV, Belgium, has developed expertise in the production of plastic prototypes and medical models utilizing Rapid Prototyping Techniques of Stereolithography and Selective Laser Sintering. These techniques can be described as printing techniques, but instead of using ink and paper, 3D objects are being 'printed' by a laser, adding one slice on top of another in a vessel of liquid polymer (Stereolithography / SLA) or powder (Selective Laser Sintering / SLS). As the laser makes contact with the liquid or powder, the material will harden, producing a 3D model.

.MGX by Materialise specializes in manufacturing unique and customized products in collaboration with the most promising international contemporary designers, with a focus on design, fashion, art, NSA architecture, cosmetics and the interior design market.

'Our goal is to provide global service for design and product customization, innovative production solutions, and to promote the use of Rapid Manufacturing in these design markets under the .MGX brand, and in collaboration with other brands and market leaders.'
